Sustainable Aviation Fuel from e-Methanol
StormFisher Hydrogen produces methanol, derived from green hydrogen, at our e-Fuel facilities in North America that is used as feedstock to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF), a key component in the decarbonization strategy of the aviation industry.
Decarbonization in the aviation industry presents unique and difficult challenges. Replacement fuels must meet high energy density requirements for lift off and sustained flight, meet current storage and weight restrictions, and scale to match continuous increases in flight demand.
e-SAF is currently the only drop-in-ready solution to help lower emissions caused by the burning of fossil fuels. SAF is molecularly the same as a fossil fuel, only differing in its method of production that generates fewer emissions and results in a lower overall carbon intensity.
StormFisher Hydrogen produces e-Methanol via electrolysis-produced hydrogen. Our e-Methanol acts as a feedstock to produce e-Kerosene, the main component of jet fuel.
As e-Methanol is produced without the use of biomass as feedstocks, it dramatically reduces the overall carbon intensity of the production and is a scalable solution.
All other methods of SAF manufacturing, other than using an e-Fuel as feedstock, require biomass, either purposefully cultivated for SAF production or through waste collection and processing, are limited by their feedstock availability.
e-Fuel production, on the other hand, has an increasingly abundant supply of CO2 that can be captured from existing industrial processes, such as ethanol production, or through carbon capture projects. This means that e-Fuel production can be scaled without the traditional limits of organic feedstock-based biofuels.
